A Hand Full of Prayer ~ Heidi Hlohinec

A relationship with God really is no different than a relationship with anyone else. If we want to be close to Him and know Him well, we need to talk to Him often. Although it is good to establish a regular time when we pray, the reality is, you can talk to Him anytime, anywhere, about anything. He is the one friend who is with you wherever you go!

We can often get bogged down with all the things we need to tell God. How can we possibly remember it all and share everything? I would like to share a simple model that you can use to guide your prayers. All it requires is your hand!

Which finger is closest to you? It’s your thumb! This finger will remind you to pray for those who are closest to you - your family and friends. Tell God about these special people in your life and share prayer requests on their behalf.

Which finger do you use to point? It is the finger next to your thumb. This finger will remind you to pray for the One who will always point you in the right direction. Pray for God to be your Lord and Saviour, to be your Shepherd, and to be your Protector, among many things. Praise Him and thank Him for who He is, all He has done, is doing, and will do for the world and for you.

Which finger is the tallest? It is the middle one. This finger will remind you to pray for those that lead us, like our government, your pastor, your teachers at school, or your boss at work.

Which finger is considered the weakest? It is your ring finger. This finger will remind you to pray for those who are weak and in need - those who are unable to help themselves.

Which finger have we not mentioned yet? It is the smallest finger! This finger will remind you to confess your sins and to pray for your own needs. (Did you notice that all the other fingers reminded you to pray for others first? It is no mistake that your own prayers come last. Not because you are any less important to God. No, God loves each one of us equally but He does teach that there is no greater love than when one lays down his own life for his friends. In other words, God wants us to put others before ourselves, to recognize that “I” am not the most important one of all.)

No matter what we tell God, God assures us that He is listening and that He will respond to our prayers if we come to Him in faith John 15:7, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.”

Seek God and talk to Him often, not only will your relationship with Him be stronger because of it, but your life will reap much blessing!
